Vera and her husband Frank started with a concession at Dundarave Pier in 1977, where they gained both reputation and renown. After retiring 33 years later, the fate of the legend was in the hands of someone who could take over. Gerald Tritt, a long time family friend and food-service business veteran, agreed to take the reigns in 2000 and he opened several more locations. In 2001 Noah Cantor, the professional football player, became Tritt's business partner and the Kits location was opened. The group franchised its first location at U.B.C. in 2005 and is watching the chain grow rapidly.
Burgers, Burgers and More Burgers
A menu chock-full of diet-busting options, the main attraction is burgers. The restaurant serves classic, homemade, single patty, double patty, natural, organic, open-faced and Thai. For the vegetarians, there’s a veggie burger option, which holds it’s own next to the meatier choices. Not stopping there, Vera’s also offers hot dogs, sandwiches, daily specials, a kids menu, soup, chilli, salads and of course, French Fries. The extreme flavour shots require a bit more bravery, but are a popular pick to spice things up. Also, look out for the “Build a Better Burger” contest, where customers can create their own for a chance to have it featured on the menu.
