A Historic and beautiful facility
The Vancouver Art Gallery is one of the city’s most recognizable and famous buildings. It is the largest art gallery in Western Canada and has a rich history in the city. The building, located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, was once the provincial courthouse. The turn-of-the-century archtecture is fantastic both inside and out. The gallery is home to national and international works of art and its exhibits feature a variety of contemporary and traditional examples. Currently, the Vancouver Art Gallery has about 8,000 pieces of artwork worth over $100 million dollars. There is also an extensive collection of work by local artist Emily Carr. Exhibits are constantly changing and feature world-renowned and innovative masterpieces. Be sure to check with the museum to see which exhibits are currently on display.
Education through art
The Vancouver Art Gallery is a huge contributor to education in the city. School and family groups are invited to stop by and enjoy their in-depth tours and guided discussions. Walks with their “animateurs” leave hourly. Occasionally, special tours conducted by the actual artists or curators are also available, free with general admission. In addition to classroom material for teachers, children can also enjoy the gallery with their family. The third Sunday of each month is an opportunity for children to enjoy art through hands-on activities with gallery staff. It’s a great place to spend the day and learn how inspirational and enjoyable art can be.
Services and rentals
The gallery is a beautiful facility that can be rented out for galas, award ceremonies and cocktail parties. The gallery rotunda, lobby and original courtrooms can be used for dining and reception-style events. The central location, in the heart of downtown, makes it the perfect place to hold your function.
Private displays
Want to bring some pricless art home? The gallery offers rental of a few contemporary art pieces, which can be taken home for four-week intervals. As well, the gallery offers traditional services, such as a coat check, a gift shop and café.
