Urban Crowds
Through glass doors and up a short flight of stairs, Urban Sushi is a constant hive of activity. It’s busiest around lunch time when hungry noon-time crowds come to get their fix of cheap, satisfying Japanese food. Line-ups are common, but don’t despair: They move quickly, thanks to an efficient staff, and the wide-ranging selection and freshness of the ingredients make the wait worth it.

The Scene
Order at the counter, help yourself to water or tea at the self-serve counter, then grab a seat while you wait for your dishes to be brought out by one of the smiling staff. Urban Sushi is surprisingly spacious, with two high-ceilinged rooms crammed with benches, tables and bar stools. The best seats are in the inner room — about five bar stools that face the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pedestrian-only Granville Street. The décor is utilitarian, but with distinctive Japanese touches. The pocket-sized patio is an especially sweet spot in the summer.

Sushi To Go
Urban Sushi serves typical Japanese food but its fresh ingredients set it apart from the competition. The yam tempura is delightfully crispy and the Philly roll has generous servings of cream cheese, topped with a thin slice of tender salmon sashimi. Other popular dishes include the salads, made with organic vegetables, and the kani sunomono with generous shreds of dungeness crabmeat. Urban Sushi does a busy take-out business. It serves party platters ranging from 28 to 59 pieces. Order via the website, e-mail or telephone to avoid waits. If you’re too busy for pick-up, Urban Sushi also delivers in the downtown core during dinner time with a minimum order.
