Demand for healthy alternatives has never been so large, and Urban Grain has come through for Commercial Drive pizza-lovers. The eatery makes a whole wheat, multi-grain crust and specializes in low-carb pies. Fresh, local produce is used as toppings, as well as local seafood and free-range chicken. Control the amount of cheese you indulge in (if you’re ordering a whole pie) by making a simple request to the chef. Seeds and nuts are even thrown on a few pizzas to enhance their flavour and up their nutritional components.

Inventive Pies and More
Urban Grain boasts an exciting menu of pizzas that you won’t find anywhere else. The roster of more than 20 pies is separated into four categories: supreme chicken, deluxe meat, gourmet veggie and seafood club. Unique choices include the moussaka (eggplant, ground beef, roasted red pepper and feta cheese), the tropical chicken (tomato satay sauce, zucchini, marinated chicken, pineapple, sesame seeds and cheddar) and the pesto shrimp (pesto sauce, signature shrimp, roasted tomatos, black olives, mozzarella and cheddar). Sticking with the healthy theme, nearly half the menu is made up of vegetarian pizzas. To accompany your pie, you can also choose from a few pasta dishes, salads, breads and chicken wings, which are, unfortunately, not of the healthy variety! Pizzas come in three sizes and about a half-dozen are available by the slice every day.

Urban Escape
Its pizzas are different and so is its atmosphere. Urban Grain offers a chic spot to grab a quick bite. The restaurant has an ultra-urban feel with lime green and orange walls, chrome accents and a touch of greenery. You can grab a spot at one of the funky black and white plastic stools that sit at a glass bar and watch the action on the Drive, or you can score the sole wooden table for four in the joint. When it's warm outside, a spot at one of the tables on the sidewalk is also prime. Urban customers are primarily there for take-out and while you wait for your order, you can sit on a stylish high-back white lounge chair and watch entertainment news on the flat-screen television mounted on the wall.
