Profile Last Updated: August 05, 2008
The little yellow house near the busy corner of Pacific and Hornby Streets is one of Vancouver’s oldest houses. Originally built in 1896, the house is now surrounded by modern condos and office buildings, but within is an oasis of fine Italian food, verdant terraces, and welcoming service. This is Umberto’s, established in 1973 by restaurateur Umberto Menghi and still going strong.
A World Apart
Umberto’s specializes in private parties and large groups. It offers two distinctive private dining rooms, a smaller room seating 20 guests, and the spectacular “wine room” that accommodates 30 for sit-down meals. As the name implies, the wine room surrounds guests with the contents of the restaurant’s impressive cellar. Gaze up at the 18 ft ceiling – the collection continues on the mezzanine, right up to the top. The wine room leads to a private garden terrace – perfect for catching the air on a summer night.
Specializing in Special Occasions
To book a private dining room, you would be well advised to plan ahead. The restaurant is popular for wedding receptions and anniversaries, birthday parties, holiday parties, and business functions. It shares the kitchen and menus of adjoining Il Giardino, but the friendly, professional staff can, of course, help orchestrate a meal perfectly in tune with guest’s tastes and what’s fresh and seasonal.
