Turks is warm and welcoming, with coffee coloured walls, lots of live plants and funky world music always on rotation. There are several different seating options to suit your activity. An intimate coffee date for two? Whisper sweet nothings across one of the high round tables and enjoy mood lighting from the little lamps. Working away on your computer? The long, thick wooden bar right down the middle of the café is a good place to get down to business. Catching up with a group of friends? The comfy upholstered bench or outside tables lend to lively conversation. The setting stays bright and interesting thanks to the ever-changing collection of pieces by local artists that adorn the walls.
Artisan espresso and tasty accompaniments
From espresso shots to Turks' “Stovetop” long espresso with liquid gold and cream and everything in between, this premium coffee shop has the brew for you! The complete collection of Mighty Leaf teas is also available, along with Jones Sodas and Happy Planet juices. To go with your beverage, Turks serves a variety of sweet and savory treats that vary day to day and include cookies, biscotti, tarts, loaves, veggie rolls, mini-quiches and Turks’ sought-after sticky cinnamon buns. To recreate Turks coffee at home, there are about a dozen different kinds of beans available that can be grinded to your specifications.
Coffee connoisseurs
Brian Turko and his wife Linda started selling coffee from their East Vancouver home in 1988, before opening Turks in 1997. The coffee connoisseurs bought Milano Coffee from Italian master roaster Francesco Curatolo, a pioneer in Vancouver’s coffee culture, who took Turko under his wing. Milano is known for its superior multi-bean espresso blends you won’t find anywhere else in Canada, although Turko does supply other high-end coffee bars, boutique hotels and fine restaurants.
