We thought the rainbow was a particularly nice touch.

View From the Top
There it was, hanging over Burrard Inlet and the Second Narrows Bridge, not far from Burnaby Mountain. The light was at its magic hour peak, with that magnificent golden tinge you never see except late in the day when the sun manages to thrust a few rays beneath rain clouds. And we - my partner and a friend from the Antipodes - were ensconced in window seats in the Top of Vancouver Restaurant at the top of the Sinclair Centre, watching the world turn.

And this extraordinary view is the best thing about the restaurant. The food is acceptable, and you do pay a premium for the view, but simply to sit, perhaps sipping some wine or a beer, as the panorama revolves before your eyes, is worth the price of admission.

The Food
For the record, I had a starter of lightly breaded fried Mozzarella slices, while my companions each had Scallops St. Jacques, served with swiss cheese in a white wine sauce. Cheese became something of a theme for me, as I then had the Seafood Canelloni for a main course. This consisted of two tubes of canneloni stuffed with seafood, mainly minced salmon, in a white sauce, covered with Swiss cheese and more sauce. My companion had the Braised Lamb Shank, which she found tender and tasty. Our Antipodean friend had salmon, which he enjoyed but was unable to compare with anything else, as it was his first-ever experience of the fresh, un-canned fish. Only one of us had a dessert, a very nicely-presented Chocolate Terrine.

The wine list has selections from France, British Columbia, South Africa and Australia. Our half-litre of house BC Cabernet was light and pleasant.

You can spend a good deal more than we did, by the way. The Top of Vancouver's version of Surf-n-Turf - steak with king crab legs is at the top of the pricelist. You can also enjoy a similar dish, with lobster instead of steak, called "The King Crabster" or how about the Beluga caviar? Some of the other dishes, such as the Vegetable Lasagna, the Chicken Cordon Bleu or the Filet Mignon are more reasonably priced.
