Will Rafuse created most of the tomato themed art dotting Tomato Fresh Food Café’s walls. Under the trees that grow through the floor to the skylight, co-owner Christian Gaudreault greets people. He knows many faces because customers repeatedly visit the restaurant throughout the week. In 2003, Tomato Fresh Food Café received the Gold standing for Best Neighbourhood Restaurant from Vancouver Magazine. Considering Gaudreault’s friendliness and sociable staff, the acclamation is well warranted.
Community Consciousness
But friendliness alone doesn’t make the Tomato stand out in their community. They strive to use ingredients supplied by local organic farmers, beef from the nearby Nicola Valley and Ocean Wise seafood. These choices make your breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner a fresh, regional, and environmentally conscious delight. Try the wild sea prawns sautéed in fresh ginger and orange-lime sauce followed by the mustard and tarragon roasted free-range chicken. Pair your meal with a glass of wine from Tomato’s well-rounded list. For a treat, try an item off the ever-changing dessert menu. Every week means new seasonal goodies.
As Fresh As It Gets
Not only can you sit at the bar while eating your meal at Tomato, you can watch the cooks sauté, grill, carve and marinate everything from Pacific wild salmon with mouth watering rosemary red wine butter to the vegetarian friendly Portobello mushroom burger. Surveying the talented kitchen staff may even give you some fresh ideas about how to create entrees at home. Luckily, Tomato’s recipe book, As Fresh As It Gets, is available to help you along in your own kitchen. The book has been awarded the Bronze for Best Cookbook from Independent Publisher and is full of tasty ideas.
