Since opening just off the trendy South Main (SOMA) strip late in 2008, Three Lions Café has become a local favourite. It can be difficult to get a table on Friday and Saturday nights. One reason is the thoughtful selection of unique British beers, ciders and scotches, not to mention a solid wine list. Another reason is the food. This isn’t the dull, overcooked fare of yesteryear. This is the England of Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Gordon Ramsay. Owners Ryan McKeown and Simon Conway are British ex-pats with a passion for good food. Conway is a seasoned chef who has worked for fine restaurants in Chicago and Bermuda as well as Vancouver. Together, they have developed a diverse menu of traditional British dishes with a twist. They’re committed to quality, organic ingredients and local sourcing whenever possible. Everything is prepared fresh on a daily basis.
A Spin on Tradition
Three Lions stays true to its English roots. What’s a pub without bangers and mash or fish and chips? The difference is that the fish is freshly caught, and has been cloaked in a chive-scented tempura batter. Familiar dishes such as cottage pie (with organic beef) and lamb stew similarly receive a spin on tradition. The pub also specializes in some less-utilized cuts of meat, such as lamb neck, brisket and bison short ribs. On weekends, you can tuck into a good old-fashioned and substantial English breakfast.
Friendly Ambiance
Three Lions is designed to evoke a traditional pub, with modern design accents. The ambiance is friendly and unpretentious, making it the perfect place to meet up with good friends.
