Profile Last Updated: April 02, 2009
Stage makes its home in a historic landmark building, yet still creates a modern vibe. Located in Victoria’s funky Fernwood neighbourhood, the 1909 building was revamped in 2006, and is now a community gathering place that also includes a coffee shop and affordable housing. Inside the hip bar, Victoria’s stylish set relax in a semi-industrial space that features exposed brick, slate grey walls, wood floors, bold art by locals and an open kitchen. There’s space for about 50 diners in the cozy bistro, including seats at the wine bar, which was built from a refinished section of a bowling lane salvaged from the demolished Victoria landmark, Mayfair Lanes. Just steps away from the Belfry Theatre, Stage is a great place to visit before or after the stage!
Small Plate Selections
Stage offers a selection of small plates that take old-world tastes to a new level, while keeping them accessible. The menu is inspired by Hungarian comfort foods and is divided into five themes: charcuterie, vegetables, cheese, fish and meats. Start with artisanal cheeses accompanied by organic wood-fired breads, before sampling dishes built around seasonal produce from local farmers. The Hungarian influence can be seen in dishes like pork belly served over roasted squash and grilled apples, sausage with onion gravy and mash, and “langos,” a savoury fry bread sprinkled with Maldon sea salt and garlic. There’s also a strong West Coast influence with dishes like Cortes mussels cooked with chipotle, coconut and lime, and Sooke trout with bacon, green beans and house-smoked almonds.
Unwind With Local Wines and Premium Cocktails
Stage boasts one of the best collections of bottles in the city. The bistro has a focus on B.C. wines with global choices rounding out the collection. About 15 wines are available by the glass in two different sizes, with three-ounce tasters allowing diners to create their own wine flights to match their menu. Stage also serves up tasty premium martinis and cocktails, including classics and originals like the Fernwood Greens (sour apple, vodka, lime and white grape) and the Victorian (Victoria gin, bitters and cucumber).
