Fifteen teachers run classes at this studio, many of them having studied yoga in India and several of them with Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois, founder of the Ashtanga tradition. Some run occasional workshops in their areas of specialisation, such as yoga for kids, viniyoga, Vedic chanting, or Patanjali's yoga sutras. Guest teachers also run workshops on, for example, chanting, introductions to Ashtanga and breathing.
What is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is a dynamic and vigorous style of postural, or Hatha, yoga. The style generates intense heat that makes muscles supple and allows postures to be done safely and effectively. The heat also produces sweat. Each of the postures in vinyasa ashtanga yoga is linked by a connecting movement called vinyasa, unique to this practice. Also emphasised is the ujjayi breath, a smooth yet powerful style of deep breathing; the internal energy locks, or bandhas; and the gaze or dristi. In concert with the postures, these four elements create a strong, supple body and a calm, centred mind.
City Yoga, like other studios, strives to create a safe and pleasant environment, and has common guidelines regarding cells and pagers, wearing perfume or cologne, not eating before class, and informing the teacher before class of any unusual physical conditions. Practitioners are particularly urged to choose a class appropriate for their level of practice, and since an invocation is chanted at the beginning of ashtanga classes, to be punctual.
Four to seven classes run daily, seven days a week. Earliest class starts at 6:45 a.m. and the last at 7:30 p.m. Power Lunch classes are also available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from noon until 1:30 p.m. There are only three classes on Saturdays.
