A Little Bit of Home
This community centre offers cultural, education and recreational services for those of Scandinavian heritage and others interested in the culture. Languages spoken include Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Icelandic, and the centre offers language classes as well. Scandinavian décor gives the centre’s meeting rooms personality and the Fireside Lounge, features a massive rock fireplace and bar and is adjacent to a large covered sundeck.
Always Something Going On
The centre is a popular meeting location for many clubs and organizations including the Trollheim Lodge, the Sleipner Lodge, the Finnish Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Svenska Skolen, the Swedish Cultural Society, Runeberg Lodge and the Scandinavian Folk dancers. Speaking of folk dancing, this is a great place to practice or attend a folk dance workshop. And the music you hear may not be for the dancers at all, but an accompaniment to one of the choirs who rehearse at the centre.
Nordic Flavour
Looking for a taste of Scandinavia? Try one of the cooking and baking classes or come to one of the many events such as the Midsummer Festival to enjoy a salmon BBQ and Scandinavian foods like Swedish meatballs and Danish smørrebrød, or winter dishes such as rommegrot and lutefisk. For the sports minded, check out the annual Paavo Nurmi run, named after nine-time Olympic gold winner Paavo Nurmi.
Facilities are available for rental, including a hall that can hold 200 people for:
