Saltspring Soapworks has a rich, organic history that dates back to the early 1970s, beginning on Saltspring Island. There, storeowner Linda Quiring started making soap and herbal products with backyard ingredients. Using vegetable oils and adding botanicals, herbs and flowers from her garden and the surrounding countryside, Quiring’s handmade soaps impressed her friends and family so much, she decided to go into business, selling to small boutiques before opening her own flagship shop. The business is still based on Saltspring Island, the organic capital of Canada, and Quiring’s family members make up the bulk of the staff.
Indulgent, Innovative Products
Saltspring Soapworks sells much more than just handcrafted soaps in its quaint Johnson Street boutique. Luscious loofahs hang from pegs on exposed brick wall, tins of bath bombs look like candies in gardening buckets and the smell of natural body creams fills the shop. Saltspring is known as an innovator in bath products, and through the years has introduced items like “Body Gelato,” which is a natural body scrub that acts as an exfoliant and a moisturizer all in one. And not just for ladies who love lavender, the shop boasts a “Stone Bay” line for men, which includes shaving cream, aftershave and soaps.
Good for You, Good for Mother Nature
Saltspring Soapworks is dedicated to the wellbeing of the community and the environment. The soapmaker has stayed true to its roots and has never compromised on ingredients using, for example, olive and coconut oils, not mineral oil and petrochemicals. Other good-for-you ingredients not found in traditional soaps include lime, chlorophyll and seaweed. Whenever possible, the ingredients are grown locally and organic selections are made. The end result is the finest artisan soaps available, which have no negative impact on nature.
