Tasty Lunches To Go
Expect to line up at Rheinland Bakery at lunchtime, as downtown workers flock to the tiny bakery for fresh sausage rolls, beef pie, Cornish pastries and chicken curry. The lunch specials that include a savory, a sweet and a juice for the price of a sandwich anywhere else are a big draw. There are no seats at this European-style bakery that features exposed brick walls, stained-glass lamps, antique accents, but there are plenty of parks nearby where you can enjoy your meal.

Creative Cookies and Sweets

Rheinland Bakery often earns top place in readers’ choice awards in the local papers and the favourable ranking has a lot to do with its tasty sweets. Every day, there are several trays of freshly baked treats like cookies, bars, muffins and pastries. Customers come in droves for the seasonal specialties, such as lace cookies, baked only for Christmas, Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Easter. Also around Christmas, mincemeat tortes and tarts, butter tarts and spritz cookie are big sellers. Christmas stollen is a specialty, and the German owners use an original Dresden recipe —order early to ensure you don’t miss out. Special order cakes are also available and can be decorated for any occasion, including weddings.

Bread Box Extraordinaire

Along the back wall of Rheinland Bakery there is an impressive wall of breads. Favourites include the many varieties of German rye bread, organic spelt and braided breads. After decades of baking, shop owner Hans-Peter Scheiler developed a sensitivity to wheat and so he offers several wheat-free varieties of loaves, as well as tortes and cookies. The bakery has solved other allergy problems by offering rice, potato and soy breads and treats. Rheinland is also a wholesale supplier to many upscale hotels and restaurants in town, and is always taking new customers.
