Located on the edge of Bastion Square in a basement space, Rebar was once a hidden treasure — until word got out about its friendly vibe and satisfying fare. Open since 1989, Rebar has become a Victoria institution. The cute eatery is half underground, but still bright thanks to plenty of light streaming in from the street-level windows. The décor is akin to what you’d find in your typical Victoria hippy-grandma’s kitchen: Oilcloths with harvest patterns cover the tables, live plants sit in the window sills and there’s a mish-mash of decorative items on the walls: shells, novelty signs, plates and mirrors. Rebar is family friendly and a great place for groups. Solo diners can also feel at ease enjoying a meal and the newspaper at the long bar.
Veggies have never tasted better! Rebar is known for serving up the freshest, funkiest, healthiest fare on the Island. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can treat yourself — and your heart — any time of day. While the focus is on vegetarian meals, seafood makes an appearance in some dishes. Rebar’s fresh juices, smoothies and wheatgrass concoctions are also popular and locals working in the area often stop by for their daily dose of fruits and veggies. Rebar is dedicated to ethical and environmentally sustainable ways of cooking and uses organic, local, seasonal ingredients whenever possible.
