Locals call it the O.B. This old-time tavern and hotel built its reputation back in the 1960s as the only place to party in White Rock. Young rockers, bikers and underage Americans would line the street hoping for a spot to take in the battle of the bands and knock down a cool one. The history of the O.B. is rich and dates back to 1930, when it was built as a commercial building and housed a barber shop, cafe, illegal gambling spot and tourist hotel before the O.B. The building has undergone major renovations, but its basic structure is still intact. Times have changed, but today the Ocean Beach Hotel is still lovingly called the O.B. and remains one of the best places to party in White Rock.
Centered across from White Rock Beach pier, the O.B.’s sun drenched deck with a 180-degree ocean view is a gorgeous place to have a drink in the summer. Inside, the prominent bar is the hub; with comfy leather loungers, cozy booths and couches surrounding the polished hardwood dance floor. Top 40 and rock music is usually on the airwaves, but live bands and DJ acts often make appearances, too. A sports bar at heart, the big games are always on TV. The O.B. is a lively party place and it can be tough to call it a night. Unfortunately, the hotel upstairs is no longer open, so you can’t check in and never leave!
Feast on Pub Fare
The O.B. is known to serve up some of the best pub fare in the Fraser Valley. Burgers, steaks, and fish and chips reign supreme here. Outside, the sandwich boards feature daily specials including breakfast options. Start your day at the beach with a variety of egg dishes including poachers, omelets and scrambles. Too late for breakfast: Cozy up to the O.B.’s ever-popular clam chowder. Lunch choices include a big variety of sandwiches, salads and wraps that cater to everyone’s taste and pocket book. If you’re just in the mood to share some snacks over a cool beer with friends, the starter menu offers a variety of finger food, including their famous chicken wings, which come in a variety of flavours. The drink menu features irresistible martinis, wines, tap beers (best by the pitcher) and if you are in the mood to celebrate, fine champagne.
