The Mind and Matter Art Gallery is a commercial gallery selling original art in various genres including wood sculpture, paintings, pottery, blown glass, and soapstone carving. Established in 1966, the gallery encourages artists to discuss and explain their creations to browsers. This 2,000 square foot A-frame building with its rustic interior sits amid three acres of beautifully manicured gardens. It was here that Arnold Mikelson, a sculptor of wood, created his own beautiful works.
Mikelson’s art
Arnold Mikelson died in 1984, but his extraordinary works of art will live on for centuries to come. Today, the gallery displays original art by a number of artists, along with an extensive collection of Mikelson’s wood sculptures. Many of his works have travelled far and wide, and are now displayed in museums, private collections and galleries around the world. Mikelson’s story is a fascinating and colourful one, and it’s well worth investigating at the gallery.
Festival seasons
The Mind & Matter Art Gallery hosts two festivals annually. The Festival of Arts, which takes place in July, is open to any art medium, including painting, pottery, wood and stone sculpture, glass blowing, batik, and jewellery design. It is now one of the largest art exhibitions in the area, offering a wonderful display of one-of-a-kind pieces. The exhibit takes place outdoors in the extensive gardens, with contributions from over 100 artists. Thousands of enthusiastic patrons attend each year. The annual Christmas exhibition features seasonal creations, such as wall hangings, jewelry, hand-blown Christmas tree balls, and candles, exhibited by over 30 artists. It’s the perfect place to pick up unique and treasured gifts for the special people in your life.
