Near the government dock in Sooke there is a little building that was originally a 1950s bungalow. It spent its second incarnation as a fish market before becoming Markus’ Wharfside Restaurant in 2003. Inside this little light blue panelled home is an intimate setting of nine tables dressed in white linen and topped with elegant china, fresh flowers and candles. The walls are always dressed with the work of a cycle of Sooke artists. The art can be admired but it is also for sale just in case a piece catches your eye. Dine outside on the patio when the weather is warmer and enjoy the view. Accompany your meal with a glass of wine from the diverse wine list.
Slow Food With Local Ingredients
Markus’ Wharfside Restaurant specializes in slow food. Slow food is reputed to have outstanding taste. It begins as part of a sustainable system and is harvested in good working conditions. Since 1989, the slow food movement has become increasingly popular as people all over the world embrace this way of enjoying a meal. There’s an emphasis on mindfulness, good health and great taste. The produce, organic meats and seafood are all local and unprocessed. Simple flavours with Mediterranean, Italian, Mexican and German origins are integrated into recipes that are singular and eclectic.
Decadent Dining With a Healthy Flair
Start out with an appetizer, with a choice from marinated, grilled eggplant with a roma tomato and garlic confît, local organic greens and Balsamico vinaigrette or seared scallops with double smoked bacon, orange reduction and local organic marinated beets. The well rounded main courses feature a grilled scallops dish, served with roasted red peppers, scallions, Yukon potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Another choice comes in the form of oven roasted free range chicken breast with roasted potatoes, rosemary and sage pan juices and seasonal vegetables. Finish off your dinner with one of the flavourful desserts or try the trio plate which includes Panna Cotta with caramel sauce, Tiramisu with Amaretto cream or the Belgium chocolate mouse with berry compote.
