Quaint Community Vibe
Located across from the Belfry Theatre on the pedestrian-only Fernwood Square, Lucy’s is a quaint addition to the community. The small bistro is run by husband-wife team chef Jeff Keenliside and hostess with the mostess Micki. The bustling eatery borrows its name from the middle name Micki was given by childhood friends because her parents didn’t give her one. The friendly Fernwood couple will share the story with anyone who asks at this welcoming bistro. The small, cozy space has an intimate vibe and features attractive art by local talent on the earthy-toned walls, and big chalkboards announcing the specials du jour. When it’s nice outside, the place to be is on the sidewalk patio where you can watch all the action in the square.
West Coast Wonders
West Coast cuisine gets a little French flair at this foodie favourite. The small, simple menu features sexy dishes sure to delight. Start with the popular roasted beet salad with toasted hazelnuts, chevre, mixed organic greens and sherry vinaigrette. Artisan pizzas also make a great appie with choices like pulled pork, sliced pears, caramelized onions and cambozola. Mains marvel diners with options like chicken confit, Saltspring Island mussels, halibut cheeks and cassoulet. The refined cheese and charcuterie platter is a must for those who like to sample local meats and accompaniments. It all goes great with a bottle of B.C. wine, and there are plenty of palate-pleasing options on the menu. Fancy sandwiches feature on the lunch menu and weekend brunch takes creative liberties with your favourite egg dishes.
ocus on Local, Seasonal Organics
The MO at Lucy’s is to provide diners with affordable meals crafted with local, organic ingredients. The chef works closely with farmers to ensure the freshest produce gets to the table, and strives to source seafood that’s sustainable. The menu is small but eclectic and is always changing to reflect what’s in season. For a really authentic experience, visit the restaurant on a Tuesday evening in the summer and see the source of some of the fresh produce at the Fernwood Village Night Market, which takes place right in the square.
