Owners Rico Bondi and Beik Hosseini opened the Libra room in 2001, originally as a panini cafe with live music, but since then it has seen some major changes. Late in 2007 they completed renovations, expanding the small jazz club into the bakery next door to create a more open, social space to accommodate the parade of local musicians who grace their stage and help create an upbeat party atmosphere. The décor is urban chic, with exposed brick cut outs, Gothic chandeliers and a colourful, eye-catching bar. With an extensive martini menu that plays off the astrological chart and good food made from scratch, the Libra Room is fast becoming a staple on The Drive.
Music Makes the People Come Together
With an additional 40 seats added to the dining room and another 12 at the bar, the Libra Room is finally able to seat the many eager customers who were often turned away before the renovations. They’ve also added an intimate lounge in the back, complete with a fireplace and comfy couches creating a nice getaway from the otherwise bustling space. The musicians who play the Libra Room regularly have definitely gained a following as evidenced by the packed house they play to night after night.
What’s Your Sign?
The martini and “cosmic libations” list is one of the highlights of the extensive menu, offering up a drink for each sign, from the Virgo martini made with vodka, white chocolate liqueur and espresso, to the Pisces made with Malibu, Alize and pineapple. The food menu is just as lengthy, with tasty offerings such as hot pots and mussels, homemade pizzas, pastas and salads. They also offer a wide array of social food, with appetizers such as roasted shallot and garlic white bean dip and several sharing plates, like Mediterranean and vegan platters.
