Cannibalistic Coffee Beans And Other Absurdities
You may notice that The Laughing Bean’s sign has a laughing coffee bean on it. The thing is, he’s drinking a steaming beverage. Presumably this beverage is coffee. And so goes your introduction to the silly absurdity that permeates the atmosphere at this neighbourhood coffee shop. Life-sized artist mannequins are often waving to the Hastings Street traffic outside. Inside, an IV filled with coffee hangs from the ceiling for those who can’t get their caffeine fast enough. And then there’s Wayne and Rebecca Bertrand, the jocular owners, and their comical staff. They’re so funny they even won an award for Best Use of Humour in the Workplace from Rock.Paper.Scissors.

Not Just For Laughs
Despite hosting live comedy every Friday night and providing a daily dose of humour, the Laughing Bean is more than just an entertaining place to go. Their coffee is fantastic. J.J. Bean provides their house roasts and you can often get latte art in your foam. Plus they serve hand made soups and sandwiches from near-by Italian delis as well as tasty pastries, scones, and muffins. They also provide wireless Internet, have live music on most Saturday evenings, and are kid and dog friendly. There’s a kids corner with toys and books to keep the little ones entertained, not to mention drinks created especially to their tastes. And Fido can expect a biscuit for a walk when you grab a coffee.

Living Up To Their Own Expectations
When the Bertrands were researching opening a business, they visited a lot of coffee shops. Some had great coffee, some had a great atmosphere, but many were missing something or another. They wanted their coffee shop to be the exception to the rule. With the great coffee roasts they’ve chosen, and their fabulous staff, the Laughing Bean has accomplished what they set out to do. It’s a place where everyone feels welcome, the customers and the staff have fun together, and the beverages offered are superb.
