The Lamplighter hosts live bands every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and most Sundays through Wednesdays as well. The bar is an event-driven venue, drawing different crowds for the mix of different bands that take the stage. The musical styles of the bands booked are also as eclectic as the crowd. The Lamplighter isn’t a rock bar, a punk bar or a hip-hop bar . . . it’s all three, depending on who is playing each night. Make sure to get there early, the 169-person capacity space does fill up quickly for most shows. The cover charge varies nightly, but the bar hosts a free Jazz matinee every Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Complete show listings are always available online.
A Piece of Vancouver’s History
In the middle of Vancouver’s historic Gastown, the Lamplighter is still inside its original home in the Dominion Grand Hotel, circa 1899. Inside, you’ll find the original tin stamped ceiling, polished hard wood, exposed brick, and gold and brass railings that highlight the bar’s historic past.
Catching a hot act can make most pretty thirsty; fortunately, the bar features a number of weekly drink specials. Combining decor that is a tribute to the past and up-and-coming bands that represent the future of the music industry, the Lamplighter is the kind of place that should not be missed in the present.
