It's a stone's throw away from the beach, it's crystal clear with a tinge of blue, and it's the epitome of cool. It causes a frenzied, cult-like behaviour among the triathletes, health nuts and exercise addicts. It attracts families, people of every shape, size and age - not to mention the latest swimwear fashion victims. And it's right in Kitsilano - the ultimate outdoors experience.
Water Enthusiasts
Every year the May long weekend marks the opening of Kitsilano pool, which not only brings water enthusiasts to its decks but also, and more importantly, signifies the beginning of summer for the local urbanites. With its ends stretching out to a massive 137.5 metres (almost three times the size of an Olympic pool), Kits pool was once touted as one of North America's largest outdoor swimming pools. It's gentle slope from zero to three metres, warm (25-degrees C) salt water and white concrete bottom can create the illusion of a sandy beach and can coax even the slowest of toe dippers to jump right in.
Sensory Overload
Whether you're counting down the laps in your one kilometre swim (a mere eight laps), bronzing the bod poolside, training for that next triathlon or puffing away during an Aquafit class - Kits pool offers you the perfect backdrop to wile away your time. Make your choice from the visual smorgasbord of snowcapped mountains, birds, sailboats and offshore barges or better yet, soak it all in at once.
Morning Swim
It's best to head to Kits pool first thing in the morning otherwise as the day wears on both pool and deck space dwindles. Equally challenging is parking, but if you're early enough you can try the adjacent pay parking lot or attempt to squeeze in along Arbutus Street. Kitsilano pool is wheelchair accessible with change rooms, rental lockers and a concession stand. There are a variety of admission options for everyone from children to senior citizens, which include drop-ins, packages or monthly passes.
