The search of deli-lovers for an authentic delicatessen ends at the busy corner of Oak Street and West 41st Avenue. Designed after New York and Chicago delis known for their mile-high sandwiches, Kaplan's captures the atmosphere and racket of a real deli, from the kitchen counters down to the dining area.
The Food
Kaplan's serves corned beef and kosher salamis from Chicago and smoked meats from Montreal. Meals usually begin with Russian-style beet borscht with boiled potato or a cup or bowl of chicken matzo soup. Sandwiches are prepared thick and need a long toothpick to hold all the fillings inside. For die-hard meat lovers, the everything-on-a-plate Monster Combinations are perfect.
To Drink
Just like in any deli, Coke or Pepsi products are available. But worth experimenting are the flavours of Dr. Brown's authentic cream soda and Cleveland phosphate (a habit-forming variety of New York egg creams). Of course, there's beer and wine, too.
