Theatre History
The building that houses the Jericho Arts Center has been a home for many different companies and organizations. In its inception it was a federal building utilized by the military, when it retired as a military base the city took ownership. Over the years a shooting range and a movie house are among the varied activities you could find at the centre. The Jericho Arts Centre (JAC) has been operating in its current capacity as a theatre, visual arts gallery and a community centre since 1990.
Curtain Call
Each year you can feast your eyes and escape to another world by attending the seven (or more) performances that the JAC hosts. The resident theatre company is the talented United Players who put on five major productions a year each running for four weeks. Non-profit theatre groups can apply to perform their plays at the JAC by meeting the criteria listed on the website.
Visual Arts Plays a Role
Coinciding with the opening of major productions, you can appreciate new visual arts shows created by local artists in the lobby of the centre. Photography, printmaking and other mediums are showcased. Come in and view the work on your own time or arrive early for your play to take in some visual arts before you enjoy the performing arts.
A Multi-Purpose Building
The JAC is run by volunteers from the West Point Grey community for benefit of resident of the neighbourhood. The objective is to assist and enable the performing and visual artists in getting their work out into the public eye. You can host your event or play in the flexible theatre in between show productions. Picking the style of seating that best suits your event or play is possible here because of no fixed-seating. The help provided can include support and technical assistance that is available for rent as well as supplies that are needed to put on a show (drapery, lighting, and much more).
