Peacock Billiards and James Joyce Bistro is not exactly a club, but you’ll feel like a private member of the most exclusive society in the city when you walk into this lavish billiards hall bistro. Peacock has been in business since 1981, and added James Joyce Bistro when it moved to its current Douglas Street location in 2007 — the same year it was voted best pool hall in North America by Billiards Digest. The luxury pool hall has more than 30 fine furniture tables, including snooker tables, 8/9 ball tables and a pocketless carom table. In addition to offering people a stylish setting in which to play pool, Peacock also offers home billiard table services, such as moving and assembly. The company also sells everything you could ever want to do with billiards, including customizable tables from top international manufacturers.
Stylish setting at literary bistro
Even if you don’t know your 8 ball from your cue ball, you can still have a great time at Peacock Billiards and James Joyce Bistro. Art lovers will be in awe of the 10,000-square-foot space, which features the work of Robert Amos and is a tribute to James Joyce, the great Irish writer. Stunning features include circular Baltic birch tables that incorporate texts from Finnegans Wake, wall panels with hand-painted Celtic knots, a thick wood bar with Ulysses quotations and paintings of Joyce. The space, billed as Victoria’s only literary bistro, is truly unique and awe-inspiring, whether you’re a fan of literature, billiards or fine dining.
Fresh, organic West Coast fare
Creative comfort food prepared with premium ingredients from local, organic farmers is the cornerstone of the menu at James Joyce. Whether you want to enjoy an assortment of appetizers with a pint of local brew, or a full-course dinner with a bottle of organic wine, there’s something to suit every palate and occasion. Deluxe pub fare comes in the form of the “Nine Ball Chorizo Beef Burger” and fancy pizzas featuring toppings like free-range chicken, house roasted red pepper and local goat cheese. The entrée list is always changing depending on what’s fresh and in season, and has included hit dishes like pan-seared sockeye salmon with lemon dill cream, maple-glazed pork tenderloin and char-grilled chicken with gnocchi.
