This historic Victorian inn has been in business since 1911, with a brief hiatus during World War II when it served as a Catholic Priory. BC’s own Emily Carr lived her final months with the nuns in 1945. The hotel was built with only outside-facing rooms so every guest could get a great view. Each floor of the 100-room inn also had its own balcony with a view to the park. The inn has been updated, of course, since its early days but it still exudes a rather traditional and genteel air in keeping with its venerable history.
Convenience and Affordability
Rooms at the Inn are modestly priced, quite spacious, and bright, with light walls, patterned drapes and matching bed covers. A variety of bed configurations are available, from singles to kings. For guests who prefer to stay in a smaller establishment, the James Bay Inn also owns the 1908 Heritage House at 250 Government Street. There are four luxury suites with fully equipped kitchens and other modern amenities. One-bedroom suites have a king-size bed and a pull out bed in the living room. The studio units have one queen-size bed. All suites have telephones, TVs and ensuite bathrooms. Want something even cosier? The James Bay Cottage is a private detached two-bedroom unit that is completely furnished. It has a private telephone, TV, fireplace, kitchen and bathroom, and parking for two cars.
The James Bay Inn’s onsite Colonial Café is casual, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. If you like a bit of entertainment as well as good food, try the JBI Pub that features pool, darts and keno. JBI also runs the Blackfish Café, a floating restaurant on the inner harbour offering casual dining with such favourites on the menu as fish and chips and grilled burgers. Inn guests enjoy 15 per cent off their meals at all three dining locations.
