Off the beaten path is the right place to be for Nadene Bottin, owner of House of Jewels. Since 1991, her West End store has been a hidden gem offering a stylish selection of ladies clothing, jewellery and other accessories. While tourists flock to the big name stores on Robson Street a few blocks away, local fashionistas head here. Nestled between a hair salon and a corner grocery, the wine-coloured storefront is topped by a brilliant yellow sun. Inside racks of clothing from local and international designers hang along the turquoise walls. Most days Bottin and her little white dog Coco are settled in behind the long glass counter that displays most of the jewellery. More bling and gifts like silk screened wallets from Patina adorn the burgundy shelving behind the counter.
Carefully Chosen Jewel Box
Gazing into Bottin’s carefully chosen jewel box, there’s some sparkle for every occasion. Her sister Isabelle Bottin designs Minty Jewels; her current necklaces mix gold filigree medallions with chunky semiprecious stones in soft hues. The mother and daughter team behind Coral Moon combine big chain links in silver or gold with freshwater pearls and semiprecious beads in their flirtatious designs. Vancouver brand Mimi and Marge is also here with sleek sliver earrings, bracelets, rings and pendants.
Designer Wear from Local Talent
Browsing through the clothes racks, women can find just the right flirty top, sexy jeans or versatile party dress. Detail-conscious jeans from Fidelity Denim emphasize designer Jason Trotzuk’s mantra of fit, fabric and finish. Classical girly dresses and tops crafted by another Vancouverite Dace Moore feature clean flattering lines. Deanna Milligan and Stacy Kerr’s line Cherry Blossom have sassy skirts, dresses and tops in stretch jersey decorated with whimsical heat pressed images.
Accessories Plus
Additional accessories like gauzy scarves, roomy Italian leather handbags or cute cloth hats are dotted throughout the store. With her trained eye, Bottin is on hand to help customers make a tough decision or find what suits them.
