Since 1908, the Empress Hotel has stood overlooking Victoria’s beautiful, regal Inner Harbour. Designed by famous architect, Francis Rattenbury and built by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Fairmount Empress Hotel was named for Queen Victoria, Empress of India. The Fairmont Empress is a historic landmark, with a turn-of-the-century look that attests to the sophistication of a bygone era. The 477 extravagantly decorated Edwardian era guest rooms and suites are complemented by spectacular views of the city, courtyard and Inner Harbor.
"Operation Teacup"
In the 1960s, there was talk of demolishing the aging hotel to make way for a more modern structure. Public outcry over the idea was so great that it lead to a restoration of the hotel, which was labeled "Operation Teacup". In 1989 and approximately forty-five million dollars later, "Operation Teacup" was completed with the addition of an indoor swimming pool, health club, and other modern facilities.
