Highlife first set up shop on Commercial Drive in 1982. In this eclectic and ethnically diverse neighbourhood, Highlife quickly became a hangout for music lovers of all kinds. The shop regularly hosts events, such in-store performances by musicians and “Highlife Salons”, during which the staff spins new music and serves refreshments. The social gatherings offer a great opportunity to meet other likeminded people. All of the people who work in the shop are highly knowledgeable about world music and are always happy to take the time to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Highlife is also keen on promoting local events and talent, and sells tickets for a variety of shows and promotes them with posters on the walls.
Musical Jewels From Around the World
If you like to discover new music or are looking for something obscure, from anywhere from Antarctica to Zimbabwe, Highlife is the place to go. The shop boasts an impressive collection of world music that’s handpicked from around the globe. In addition to albums you won’t find anywhere else in the city, Highlife also features the work of the world’s most important musical artists, such as Tom Waits, Bob Marley, Salif Keita and Spearhead. The shop carries CDs, vinyl and DVDs.
Melodicas, Harmonicas and Other Interesting Instruments
At first glance, the instruments in the window of Highlife seem too bizarre to be anything besides an interesting display. However, the shop collects new, used and antique instruments from all over the world and sells them in the shop. You’ll find an excellent assortment of guitars and violins and more unique pieces like mandolins, banjos, ukuleles, accordions, glockenspiels and all kinds of percussion instruments. The shop also sells accessories, such as guitar strings, picks, tuners and soft cases.
