Nestled amongst hair shops, shoe sellers and across from a national sports chain, Hennessey is not exactly on a hot “dining strip.” But this is why it works. Located just west of Main Street, Hennessey’s existence is expanding the ‘urban cool’ of Mount Pleasant beyond Main. The 75-seat room complete with a 20 seat bar/lounge area is modern and chic. The walls are painted black and are anointed by furniture that looks like it’s from Sweden, Japan or China. Slick leather chairs pony up to dark wood tables decorated with bamboo centrepieces. Above the kitchen window is a beautiful, large Japanese maple painting.
Inventive Cocktails and Entrees
Drinks are sinfully sweet with crazy monikers like “banana hammock” and RSVP. And yes, there’s Hennessey on the spirits list too. The wine list is small but pairs well with much of the fusion cuisine. Menu must-haves include the cognac burger, gargantuan thai beef nachos and the PEI mussels and clams. Reservations are encouraged on weekend nights as Hennessey is usually packed all evening long. Let the Mount Pleasant renaissance continue!
High Nights at the Hennessey
Depending on the night, there’s usually some sort of special event at Hennessey – from improv to jazz to DJs spinning the latest beats. On Canucks game nights, patrons can watch the game on two large flat screens while sipping well-priced beer specials.
