Perched on the southeast corner of Main and 25th Avenue, Helen’s Grill is a time piece. Red and black checkered linoleum, soda fountain bar stools and vinyl upholstered booths create the classic fifties diner ambience. If that isn’t enough, each booth sports its own teeny tiny juke box. Tunes cost a quarter each and the selection ranges from 1950s oldies to contemporary pop. Customers can watch the action on busy Main Street while they enjoy traditional diner cuisine.
Quality, cleanliness and reasonable prices
Helen’s Grill has a faithful contingent of regulars, some who travel from as far as Maple Ridge and White Rock. The diner has become the object of much affection for three reasons: good quality food, scrupulous cleanliness and reasonable prices. The menu offers a wide range of choices sure to challenge even the most decisive customer. Souvlaki with potatoes, rice and tzatziki is one of the most popular dishes at Helen’s. Other favourites include the all day breakfast, steak and hot sandwiches. To serve those who like to try a little of everything, Helen’s offers a variety of shared plates. Several two-for- one deals are available for take out.
Gathering place for writers, artists, families and regulars
Helen’s Grill is an enduring presence amid this changing neighbourhood. In recent years the diner has become a favourite meeting place for local artists and writers. It has also served as an edgy backdrop for a photo shoot. Families are welcome and pictures of little ones now grown are displayed next to the cash register. No matter what changes on Main Street, visitors can be assured of a classic diner experience at a reasonable price.
