Guys and Dolls Billiards has been a popular local pool hall since the 1960s. Though times have changed along South Main, which is now one of the hippest neighbourhoods in the city, Guys and Dolls has kept its old school cool. Think of the mid-20th century American realist paintings by Edward Hopper. The ambiance is nostalgic and cosy, with old-fashioned overhead lamps punctuating the darkness and illuminating the emerald green tabletops. The street sign, unchanged since day one, conjures up images of the Brat Pack. There’s a full bar up front, and some café seating for those wanting to take a break from the eight-ball, have a drink and chow down on some pub fare.
Good times and cheap eats
Guys and Dolls offers an inexpensive and upbeat night on the town. While it’s a neighbourhood fixture, and frequented by locals, people come from all over Vancouver. A whole new generation has discovered pool, which was slowly dying just a few years ago. The popularity of Guys and Dolls marks the sport’s renaissance. Now the good times are back. This is a great place to relax. The casual environment attracts an interesting cross-section of people from all backgrounds and age groups. The inexpensive food and drink are an added incentive. Items include hamburgers, pizza, nachos, chicken wings and other bar food.
Weekly tournaments
One of Vancouver’s largest pool halls, Guys and Dolls boasts eleven 9-ball Gold Crown tables, and five Riley snooker tables. 9-ball pool tournaments are held every Tuesday and Sunday. You can purchase annual memberships, but membership is not necessary to rack ‘em up.
