No matter what you're looking for, the Granville Island Public Market can offer it fresh year-round - fruit or vegetables from the local farms, fresh oysters, lobsters or salmon or bread pulled out of the ovens minutes before you arrive. It's a feast for both the eyes and stomach. And if that's not enough to tempt your palate, unique stores offering soups, cheese, bulk foods or specialty pastas should do the trick.
The scene
While wandering the maze-like building, visitors can not only peruse items for their stomachs but also the talents of artisans and craftspeople, which are displayed throughout the isles of the market place. Once you're loaded up with your snack, espresso and locally grown produce, take a walk outside to the wharf's outdoor seating and watch the boats sail by.
There's more
Granville Island has plenty of action for both kids and grown-ups. While the Kids Only Market provides plenty of fun for the little guys, the Granville Island Brewing Company just across the road can offer a little something for the parents (the brew house has a tour that ends with a sampling of the microbrews). After the tour head into any of the original stores (retail chains are forbidden!), which sell anything from funky eyeglasses to designer paper to outrageous hats and jewelry. Or, if whiling away an afternoon is more your speed, plant yourself down outside and catch some of the street theatre or local artisans at work. Weekends are the busiest - especially when the weather is sunny - and parking is limited. But even so, Granville Island is a must see because of its relaxed and carefree atmosphere that offers a little something for everyone.
