For a town that stakes its reputation on outdoor recreation and health-conscious people, Vancouver doesn’t have a lot of vegetarian restaurants. Even scarcer are vegan restaurants. Gorilla Food is trying to change that with its daily menu of organic, vegan, raw foods and drinks. Everything served here is all three of those things, and whenever possible, locally sourced, too. It’s the only vegan café in downtown Vancouver, and the only one in Vancouver that’s open every day.
Live Foods, Lively Café
As you descend from the street via the plant-lined stairwell, you enter this subterranean space, filled with light, art, and Eastern-inspired music. From its beginnings located a house off Commercial Drive (which served what was affectionately referred to as “guerrilla” food), Gorilla Food evolved into a take-out window on Richards Street, and is now a full-fledged café. The name “Gorilla” made for a memorable logo, plus gorillas eat raw, organic, vegan fare too!
All Good Things
Some of the innovative dishes Gorilla Food creates include: pesto pizza on sprouted seed crust, tomato herb flax crackers, guacamole (a.k.a. live goo), veggie burgers, and chocolate fudge (made with fruit-sweetened pure cacao.) To go with a meal, or as a nutritious snack, try one of Gorilla Food’s juice blends, or the Choco-Gorilla or Blueberry Blaze smoothie thickened with ground almonds. They’re passionate about serving high-quality, and nutritionally intact foods, so expect delicious food that’s good for you and good for the planet.
