Gallery Gachet is located in a heritage building at 88 Cordova Street East, a very diverse and urban area. The aim of the gallery is to use the work of artists to educate the public and help shed light on mental health issues. Here, artists affected by mental health issues are given a place to exhibit, curate, read, teach and be a part of the arts community. It is an artist-run centre, with volunteers to help run the day-to-day gallery business.
For Show
Gallery Gachet is an open, inclusive environment that strives to provide a safe place for artists to express themselves and showcase their work. The exhibits are eclectic and diversified. Because the gallery aims to promote artists outside of the mainstream, you will find a variety of mediums on display, such as paintings, videos, photography and others. Every year, hundreds of artists submit their work for review and hundreds of people visit the gallery to view the shows.
Workshops for the Community
Besides being an artist-run space for artists affected by mental health issues, Gallery Gachet also aims to help people make a living from their work. Workshops are offered focusing on teaching artists ways to deal with their mental illness through art. There are practical lessons at the workshops, such as how to present your work and how to write and speak about the art that you are trying to sell. The workshop’s overall goal is to give guidance on how to become a successful artist.
