Walking in to pick up a loaf of bread and leaving with a torta veneta (a decadent Belgian chocolate cake with slivered almonds) is not uncommon at Fratelli Authentic Italian Baking. Decadent cookies and cupcakes sit in the window on silver tiered platters and rustic loaves of bread nestle in napkin-lined baskets. Black and white photos detailing the traditional baking process are framed on the wall and chalkboard-drawn images of Italy add to the charm. The large, sleek open space offers visitors a view into the open kitchen, so you can catch a glimpse of the work that goes into the works of art. While there are no seats inside the bustling bakery, there are a couple of tables right on the sidewalk where you can enjoy a cappuccino and a canoli.
Sweet and Savory Seduction
Fratelli’s is known for having some of — if not the — best Italian pastries, breads, cookies, cupcakes, biscotti and cakes in town. All of the recipes are original (and secret!) and the bakery uses only the freshest ingredients (local and organic whenever possible.) The selection is enormous: from flans and pies to Cornish pastries and sausage rolls. The cakes created by Fratelli’s are veritable works of art and custom designs for weddings and special occasions are a big part of their business. While sweet treats are Fratelli’s forte, the bakery also offers a wide assortment of breads and buns.
Community Supporter On and Beyond the Drive
Fratelli’s was first welcomed into the Commercial Drive community in 1997. Since then, it has been giving back by supporting and providing baked goods for several charitable events and organizations. The bakery has raised thousands of dollars for the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice through its annual gingerbread house draw and other initiatives. Charitable groups are always welcome to contact Fratelli’s for support, and the bakery does its best to oblige every request. The bakery is also dedicated to the environment and sells its own reusable fabric bags and practices eco-friendly business on a daily basis.
