Calling All Sushi Lovers
Steps away from the main tourist drag of Government Street, past t-shirt shops and whale watching outfits, there stands a mecca for sushi lovers. The setting seems odd, but somehow perfect. A multi-paned bay window juts into the street, baroque chairs cluster around small tables. This is no Asian fusion place, it’s a straight-up sushi bar. Step inside the door and it is obvious that Japanese sensibilities have taken hold here. Beyond the small wood framed vestibule, hung with blue fabric screens, is a room reminiscent of a giant lacquered box. A large screen TV hangs over the prep area playing sports scores. Somehow the small room seems to have an abundance of nooks for intimate dining. The space is sparse, tidy and welcoming. The dark walls and high ceiling seem to hush conversation without killing it.
Simply Excellent Sushi
There are no tricks here. No gimmicky combinations, nor boats floating by to serve plates at the bar. The only trick is consistently well made, fresh and tasty sushi. One of the highlights of the menu is the tuna tataki - a tuna loin barely seared on the outside, sliced in large sashimi pieces and served with a delicate ponzu sauce. Other favourites include a rainbow roll, which combines several popular types of fish wrapped around the outside of a rice roll with a core of salmon; tuna; and crab. The latter two are meals in themselves. For vegetarians, there is also a warm yam tempura roll and several kinds of pickled vegetable sushi.
Call Ahead
Despite the extra attention that seems to go into each roll, prices remain moderate. It is not unusual to find that the entire restaurant has been booked for a special event, so if you have your heart set on Ebizo, call ahead to make a reservation or to place an order for takeout.
