The administration at the Delta Yoga Centre has a policy to only include nine students per class. This honours their philosophy of providing yoga classes in a safe, non-intimidating environment, with a lot of personal attention and instruction. Classes are offered in Vinyasa yoga, gentle flow, teen and yoga fundamentals. The Vinyasa classes are a dynamic, flowing series of postures that create an exhilarating and high energy workout. Gentle flow, in contrast, is a basic yoga class that explores the foundations and basic postures. Teen classes are fun, after-school sessions, which are set to music and suitable for all levels. The fundamentals classes are specifically designed for those reluctant to join a regular beginner class, because of injuries, physical limitations or health conditions.
Exceptional Teachers
The lead instructor, Maureen Frewer, has been practicing yoga for over 30 years and teaching for more than 20. She has had special training in teaching beginners, including those with physical limitations or injuries. Known for her caring and compassionate style of teaching, her focus is on safety, using her in-depth knowledge of the yoga practice. The classes are both popular and dynamic, incorporating her work with the SFU Yoga Club and the varsity athletic training program for elite athletes. She also leads classes for the NHL hockey players and is a Lululemon ambassador.
Teacher Training
The Yoga Fitness Teacher Training Program is a comprehensive 35 hour, BCRPA-approved course. It covers all aspects of yoga, including a detailed analysis of the yoga postures, breath work, the anatomy of yoga, adjustments and modifications, class design, yoga history and philosophy, and more. Hours may be applied to the Yoga Association of B.C.’s 200 hour teacher training programs. The asana sessions incorporate instruction in verbal and hands-on adjustments, as well as use of props. These sessions include practice teaching, both in partners and in front of the group, with evaluation and feedback.
