Profile Last Updated: February 15, 2009
After surviving nearly three decades in undistinguished quarters - okay, they were downright shabby - on Hamilton Street, the CAG doubled its exhibition space when it moved to shiny new quarters on Nelson. With two new galleries, named for art pioneers B.C. Binning and Alvin Balkind, and a series of window display spaces that allow it to reach out to the street.
Vancouver Meets the World
If the space is new, the CAG's mission remains, as always, to showcase contemporary art from Vancouver and around the world. The opening show, for example, featured local art star Brian Jungen, who has established a national reputation for transforming everyday objects into inventive artworks. The Chinese-born, New York based artist Cai Guo-Qiang, winner of the grand prize at the 1999 Venice Bienalle was also featured in the same show.
Education Programs
ARTS101 is a mentorship program placing volunteer artists with youth. This hands-on learning environment provides youth with the experience and guidance they need. CAG lesson plans are designed to bring the resources of contemporary art and artists to diverse classrooms. There are also professional development programs in place.
