A rather infamous Main Street strip joint for years, the Cobalt now plays host to hardcore and thrashy bands. Thus, the clientele is often a curious mix of punk/thrash fans to hardy locals. The anti-narcotics signs on the washrooms and the exotic dancer's stage (complete with shower stall) in the middle of the room convey a definite earthiness about the place. Pool tables and TV screens abound, but the real attraction is the current crop of local acts performing here. Everybody from JP5 to Satina Saturnina come to play, bringing their fans with them. And even though occasional fights still break out here, the Cobalt's reputation as a hard-nosed bar is not completely deserved anymore. Certainly, you probably wouldn't bring your grandmother here, but if you're looking for a gritty venue featuring loud, hammering live music, this place should be on your list.
Listen to the Band
Heavier bands tend to play here, with the odd pop act showing up once in a while. Hissy Fit, Karen Foster, and Mr. Plow often make appearances. Maybe it's the shower stall, but the acoustics in the room are actually quite good.
