Free-range eggs and organic veggies reign here, making it a great alternative to the overcrowded breakfast joints located on the trendy west side of the city. Choppers is East Van all the way—serving healthy and delicious food for cheap. Their generously portioned breakfast special is a meagre $5, including JJ Bean coffee, making it a favourite of students, young families and the morning-after party crowd, who enjoy the low-lit, basement kind of vibe that mixes snowboarding chic with funky biker décor. The place fills up quickly in the late morning, but the servers are efficient and friendly and try to keep the wait to a minimum.
The Most Important Meal of the Day
The standard breakfast fare tops the charts here, along with some vegetarian options, such as “Jeannie’s Beanie Veggie Breakfast”, which is served with two free-range eggs, their spiced-just-right hashbrowns sautéed with veggies, a bowl of beans plus your choice of veggie bacon or sausages. “Steve’s Breakfast” is a crowd favourite with eggs and hashbrowns served up hot and fresh alongside three turkey sausages and toast. Or skip the bread and go with the low-carb Protein Breakfast.
Catch the Blues
Though they’ve made their name with all organic, all day breakfasts, Chopper’s also makes a mean burger and occasionally plays host to local live bands, with a focus on funky blues. Come on the second Friday of the month for Burgers and Blues or every Saturday at 7 p.m. for a live blues jam with a side of pan fries, salads, sandwiches and flathead burgers. And no matter which plate tickles your fancy, a sample of their chowder can be added to any meal for only $1 more.
