Asian Enclave
The beautifully hand-painted China Gate, which originally stood in front of the China Pavilion during Expo 86, has become a symbol of Chinatown. It also marks the entrance to the Chinese Cultural Centre, a facility dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Chinese culture. In addition to offering a comprehensive schedule of classes in Chinese language, arts and performance, the centre also presents exhibitions, concerts and other performances throughout the year. The centre also marks the main entrance to one of Vancouver's most popular tourist attractions: the famed Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. You Are Here
The Centre is a great starting point for any visit to the Chinatown area. Not only is it the starting point for special tours of the area, it is often the focal point for special celebrations such as the Chinese New Year festivities. Many locals gather here before and after the popular dragon dances and parade that make up this auspicious occasion. History and More
The Chinese Cultural Centre offers the city's best selection of books on Chinese history, art and literature as well as a variety of traditional Chinese crafts. Registration for the Chinatown ‘Walking Tours’ is also available at the book store at a very moderate price. Daily tours of the Chinatown area are offered from June to September and at other times of the year, group tours can be organized by prior arrangement only. Any history buffs looking for more tangible artefacts can pay a visit to The Chinese Cultural Centre Museum & Archives, located near the centre.
