Situated on the UBC campus, overlooking the sea, surrounded by trees and gardens, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts is truly one of the gems of Vancouver. Getting there is half the fun, as one drives along the serene beaches of Spanish Banks, the downtown core but a distant memory. The building's oddly simple cylindrical shape, which sparked more than a little controversy, can't be missed as you cruise up Marine Drive, past stately homes with their manicured lawns and gardens.
Famed for its acoustics, the theatres at the Centre attract everything from world class operas to high school bands. The styles and genres include classical, chamber, choral, jazz, big band, pop, drama, musicals, and even Japanese kimono fashion shows, to name but a few. So turn off your home entertainment center, pry yourself from that Lazy-boy, and head out to the Chan. It's your one stop culture and entertainment center.
