Walk into Casa Verde and you get a warm welcome from Sara Jose and her father, Armando Barbosa. Sara’s husband is the head chef and her mother is often busy by his side in the kitchen making Portuguese pastries. The family’s been serving up homemade traditional Portuguese fare since 1998 in the large building that was once a church where ornate details still can be seen from floor to ceiling. Large enough to accommodate 360, the fireplace and many tables keep the place cozy. The family-friendly, neighbourhood restaurant changes its look on a regular basis by painting the walls and changing decorations depending on the season or the next big soccer match. The décor is simple, featuring stunning pictures of Portugal and colourful hand painted roosters and clay dishes, which are imported from Portugal and can be purchased as souvenirs.
Taste the Tradition
Casa Verde's famous barbecue piri piri chicken, served only on Saturdays and Sundays, must be pre-ordered and more than 25 chickens are often sold out by noon. The popular dish comes with fries and salad and can be ordered in half or full portions. Don’t be disappointed if you miss out on the piri piri; there are plenty of other choices. Casa Verde is known for its seafood, especially cod fish, which is prepared in a variety of ways from cod cakes the traditional boiled fish. They’re also one of the few places in town to serve sardines — imported and grilled to perfection. Order the tapas dishes to sample as much of the cuisine as possible! Soups, salads, sandwiches and pasta, steak and pork dishes are also on the menu.
Party Place
Casa Verde shows all the soccer games (no matter what league) on two TVs: One big screen in the banquet room and a smaller one in the dining room. Euro Cup and other big soccer tournaments are marquee events. Weddings, anniversaries and baptisms are also popular events in the banquet space, which can be split into two to accommodate 200 on one side and 80 on the other. In the summer months, the party space gets booked up quickly for Saturday soirees, but starting in December, live music (local artists playing anything from Portuguese to pop) takes over the stage. Casa Verde also takes its cuisine on the road and will cater your event.
