Fostering the love of live theatre
Since 1975, Carousel Theatre for Young People has been bringing live performances to young audiences, inspiring new generations of artists and theatre patrons. Carousel Theatre produces a season of literary classics for young people at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island every year. In addition, the company tours to elementary and junior schools throughout British Columbia, bringing theatre directly to students. It also runs a popular school for young people ages 3 to 17 years.
Creating a creative community
The Carousel Theatre is committed to supporting and developing theatre for the Vancouver community. It produces a main stage season of literary classics at the Waterfront Theatre, an Elementary School Touring Program that brings theatre directly to students, a Teen Shakespeare Program and a year-round theatre school for young people. Their projects team emerging talent with veteran theatre artists as a means of enriching the creative process. In addition, Carousel Theatre supports emerging theatre companies through their annual mentorship program, which provides the means for these companies to create new works and stage productions.
Winning awards
Carousel Theatre is a cultural leader in the community. In 2008, the company was honoured with the Jessie Award and the Canada Council Prize for Outstanding Production for their acclaimed production of Seussical, which received two additional Jessies and ten nominations in theatre for young audiences. Other notable achievements include the ovation award for Outstanding Professional Musical for Seussical. Since 2005, Carousel Theatre has received a total of six Jessie Awards and thirty-three nominations; a testament to the theatre’s strong commitment to artistic excellence.
