Carens Cooking School is run by Caren McSherry-Valagao, CCP, who trained at the Cordon Bleu, the CIA and the Oriental in Bangkok. The school is known for having had teachers such as Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, Hugh Carpenter and Gulliano Buggialli teaching master classes. With small class sizes and an expert teacher, students can take advantage of the intimate setting and make sure that they properly grasp every concept and technique. Caren also founded and runs her successful Gourmet Warehouse, a retail store offering specialty foods at wholesale prices.
The classes focus on pastry baking, healthful vegetarian cuisine and East Asian, Pacific Rim, Italian and Spanish fare. Everything has the possibility of being covered. Specialty classes include appetizers, bread making, desserts, meats, poultry, salads, sauces, seafood and wine. The courses also feature interesting topics, such as “Cooking with Condiments,” “Chocolate…Chocolate…Chocolate,” “Our Home and Native Fish,” and “Tapas and New Wave Hors d’oeurves.” Call the school to find out what they’re offering this month.
Demand for classes varies, so there is no regular schedule. Classes can be scheduled, but require a minimum number of participants. They are ideal for corporate team building or a group of friends that want an enjoyable experience. Call ahead to discuss your ideas to properly schedule the right type of event.
