Walk into Canoe and the first thing you’ll notice is the grand size of the place. Soaring vaulted ceilings are supported by massive wood beams - a reminder that the building once housed the coal-fired electric generators that powered Victoria's street lights. Once in the pub, however, the size melts away and you are in a warm, intimate setting, with cushy couches, overstuffed chairs and tables filled with conversation. Don't let the folksy charm fool you. Come by on a sunny afternoon and you’ll find one of Victoria's favourite outdoor spots. Canoes, kayaks, rowing skulls and dragon boats slide by as you enjoy healthy West Coast takes on traditional pub fare, often with an Asian twist. The kitchen favours the freshest produce from local farms, several of which are listed in the menu as partners of the restaurant. There is also more formal restaurant seating, which can accomodate as many as 500 guests. Pull up in your boat if you like: there's also a full service marina right on the doorstep!

Is it a Brown Ale or a Porter?
Being a brew-pub, the star, of course, is the beer. The pub has won many awards from the brewing enthusiasts known as CAMRA. Though the selection is somewhat small, each of the four standard house offerings is a superb example of its type, though the brown ale often sparks debate. Seasonal offerings change frequently, with such flavours as a summer witbier and an autumn blackberry ale. All the beers are available for off-sales in several sizes. Canoe has also won many awards for its wine list, so be adventurous.
