The Mean Bean
A home-grown family company, Caffe Artigiano truly celebrates the value of a good cup of joe. Combining the highest-quality beans from around the world with traditional Italian brewing practices, the baristas brew up dozens of coffee beverages, from the classic Americano to a rich, nutty espresso. Since opening the first store downtown in 2000, their blends have garnered them a reputation for excellence and the title of Canada Barista Champion 2003-2005. Their extensive retail coffee menu includes half and full pounds of exotic beans, including an award-winning blend from Panama that sells for nearly $40/pound.
Cozy Corners
The warm ambiance at Caffe Artigiano is possibly its biggest draw; a far-cry from the bigger cookie-cutter chains, Artigiano offers a cozy alternative with low, faux-arched ceilings, dark wood panelling and stone tables and bar. On the walls you will find photographs of some of the baristas' more elaborate creations, a tribute to the foamy designs that have won them national acclaim. In a funky throwback to public library etiquette, all of the newspapers are hung on wooden poles by the door to the patio, open year-round and warmed with heat lamps.
Bistro Fare
All Caffe Artigiano locations offer a selection of food, from big cups of fruit salad or granola for the health conscience to oversized tuscan chicken sandwiches and hearty muffins, but the West Hastings location also offers a wide variety of salads, paninis and gourmet brunch items. Incorporating old family recipes with fresh ingredients, accomplished local chef Michael Piccolo whips up the items fresh daily in the full kitchen on West Hastings, the hub from which all the Caffe's food and catering fare is prepared and delivered.
