Looking for a mountain getaway, but don’t want to leave the city? This very local mountain, by Simon Fraser University, offers spectacular views of the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. Burnaby Mountain Park is also the home of Horizons Restaurant, a popular fine dining establishment offering west coast cuisine.
Free Family Fun
Burnaby Mountain Park is a great place to pack up the family for a picnic as there is plenty of grass space and free parking. For kids, there is a small playground to wile away those weekend afternoons. While up there, be sure to visit the Japanese monument Kamui Mintara (Playground of the Gods) as it is a must see. Wander throughout out the hilly park and take in the sights and smells of the rose garden, a perfect place to enjoy a sunset. In the wintertime, the steep slopes of Burnaby Mountain Park are a magnet for thrill-seekers who want to take advantage of a rare B.C. snowfall and go tobogganing. Even in the summer, you can find kids (and adults alike) sliding down the grassy hills on cardboard.
Mountain Hiking and Biking
There are several hiking and biking trails on Burnaby Mountain. The hikes are scenic and not as strenuous as some others around the city (like the tough Grouse Grind). For bikers, it's a challenging up-hill ride, but once you're there you can enjoy some great downhill trails, such as Dead Moped, Nicholes, Mels, Gear Jammer and more. Another route getting up the mountain is to take the bus or car pool. Enjoy the ride and take in the views when you get on top!
